Even split versus fair split
An even split — dividing the total by the number of people — works fine when everyone ordered roughly the same thing or shares the same living costs equally. It breaks down fast when one person had three drinks and someone else had a water, or when a flat's rent should be split by room size rather than headcount. That's when a custom split, with different amounts per person, is worth the extra thirty seconds.
Common bill-splitting situations
- Restaurants: Even split works for most group dinners. Custom split makes sense when there's a big gap in what people ordered, or when someone doesn't drink and shouldn't subsidise the bar tab.
- Shared flats: Rent is often better split by room size or by income if the group agrees, rather than strictly evenly. Utilities are usually fine split evenly unless usage is genuinely lopsided.
- Group trips: Running a shared list of who paid for what, then settling up once at the end, avoids the awkwardness of everyone constantly transferring small amounts to each other.
Dealing with rounding
Splitting $100 three ways gives $33.33 with a cent left over. It doesn't matter who takes the extra cent, but it's worth agreeing on a simple rule in advance — usually whoever's paying the bill absorbs the rounding difference — so nobody spends time debating a single cent at the end of a night out.
